Modernstate is the solo project of Portland resident and former Dutch Flat drummer Sam Schauer. Over the last four years Sam has been filling the gaps between his numerous bands and projects with Modernstate, his solo singer/songwriter personna. Since the demise of The Dutch Flat, Modernstate (aka Humans) has been his primary focus, combining atmospheric pop and experimental sensibilities, layers of guitar loops and electronic percussion. Sam also plays drums in ...worms. Modernstate plays a lot. Most recently and notably with the likes of Crooked Fingers, The Decemberists, American Analog Set, Mice Parade, Mary Lou Lord, and The Joggers. Modernstate's debut album, Highwater Moonboot, was a joint release between Woodson Lateral and Portland's Lucky Madison label.
