Little Grizzly began as one piece band. Singer/songwriter George Neal came to Denton, Texas in 1989 armed with a music collection full of Big Star, show tunes, Irish folk songs, The Replacements, Bob Dylan, Syd Barrett, and a bit too much marching band practice. There, he drank a lot, played with the Pogues-influenced Tir Na Nog, played trombone for celebrated ska revivalists, The Grown Ups, and earned 180 hours of college credit without ever graduating. (He swears he was going for a degree in Art History.) On Wednesday nights in the basement of a local pizza parlor, he began performing his songs under the name Little Grizzly for a handful of friends and stragglers.

In April of 1999, drummer Colin Carter and bassist Jacob Barnhart joined on as permanent members, followed by Matthew, on 2nd guitar, in December of the same year. The newly-solidified lineup began working over older songs, and developed a louder, more bombastic sound, more reminiscent of the Who and the Flaming Lips than the quieter folk leanings of Please Let Me Go. The second LGRZ LP, 'I'd Be Lying If I Said I Wasn't Scared' was released in 2001. Soon after, longtime friend Howard Draper joined, playing organ and electric piano.

Little Grizzly has shared bills with The New Year, Silkworm, Bardo Pond, The Dismemberment Plan, Edith Frost, Alejandro Escovedo, Sin Ropas, Knife in the Water, The Handsome Family, Uz Jsme Doma, and Royal Trux, among others.
